UFC 86: Jackson Vs. Griffin Live Commentary

UFC Light Heavyweight Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin (205-pound limit)

Round one: Rampage comes out looking more insane than ever. Griffin comes out with a few good combos. Forrest is throwing some good leg kicks but Rampage throws a massive combo. Rampage throws a huge punch and knocks Forrest down. Forrest gets back to his feet and the round is over.

Round two:
Forrest gave another leg kick and Rampage’s leg was done. Forrest went to work on the leg and Rampage took him down but Griffin ended up on top. Forrest passed the guard of Rampage and got side mount. Forrest then attempted an americana. Forrest got mount with two minutes remaining. The round probably went 2 points in the favor of Forrest.

Round three: Rampage comes out clearly in pain on his leg. With around 3 minutes left Rampage threw a huge uppercut. The round would be a tough one to call on points.

Round four: The forth round Rampage was throwing some huge punches. Forrest attempts a triangle but Rampage picks him up and slams him down releasing the triangle.

Round five: The round was a close one. With loads of uppercuts coming from Rampage and good control coming from Forrest.

Final result: Forrest Griffin defeats Rampage Jackson to become the new Light-Heavyweight Champion of the world via unanimous decision.

Patrick Cote (12-4) vs. Ricardo Almeida (185-pound limit)

Round one: Almeida jumps on Cote and gets a guillotine. with 2 minutes remaining Almeida takes Cote down and Cote gets him in half guard. Almeida is controlling Cote and delivering some ground n pound. The first round in my opinion goes to Ricardo Almeida.

Round two: Almeida had to get his glove fixed up prior to the round so Cote got some extra time to regain himself. Cote throws a good punch with 2:30 remaining and Almeida looks hurt. COte would of took this round on points.

Round three: Almeida keeps retreating through the round and Cote keeps on advancing. The crowd is booing about the quality of the fight. Both fighters finish the fight with their hands held high. This one is going to decision.

Final result: Split Decision in the favor of Patrick Cote

Joe Stevenson (28-8) vs. Gleison Tibau (155-pound limit)

Round one: Opening minute and Stevenson knocks Tibau down and tries a guillotine. The guilotine fails and both fighters are back to their feet. Stevenson comes in with a slam to take Tibau down. Tibau has Stevenson in a shoulder lock which Stevenson tries to relax through. I have never quite seen a face like Stevenson’s while he was sat there in the shoulder lock.

Round two: Tibau takes Stevenson down with 3:30 remaining. Tibau gets mount but Stevenson uses his legs to throw him off and get back to standing up. Stevenson gets the guillotine and Tibau is forced to tap out.

Final result: Stevenson wins the fight by submission (Guillotine)

Josh Koscheck (10-2) vs. Chris Lytle (170-pound limit)

Round one: Lytle opens in the first minute with some huge kicks. Around 3 minutes remaining and Koscheck throws a kick and slips but is instantly back on his feet. Lytle gets Koscheck in a guillotine but Koscheck manages to escape with ease. 2 minutes remaining and Lytle has Koscheck in half guard. A minute remains and Lytle is sitting with Koscheck in his butterfly guard. Koscheck nearly gains Lytle’s back but Lytle manages to get back to guard. Koscheck puts in a huge hammer fist to end the round.

Round two: Opening minute and Koscheck tries to take Lytle down. Lytle gets back up and takes Koscheck down into a guillotine. Koscheck escapes and is into Lytle’s half guard. Koscheck gets Lytle up against the cage while still in his half guard and is throwing some elbows to the head of Lytle. Koscheck starts the ground and pound with 2 minutes remaining. Lytle refuses to let Koscheck pass guard. Chris Lytle by the end of the round has lost a lot of blood. It was that good of a cut that Joe Rogan describes it as a “goats vagina”

Round three: Chris Lytle refuses to give in to Josh Koscheck and continues to fight almost getting Koscheck into a guillotine. Lytle is gassed though and Koscheck manages to get half guard and starts dropping the elbows again. With a minute remaining the referee stands up the fighters. Koscheck continues to back away from Lytle knowing he has won on points. Lytle connects a few times in the last minute making Koscheck stagger.

Final result: Koscheck wins by Unanimous decision

Tyson Griffin (11-1) vs. Marcus Aurelio (155-pound limit)

Round one: Tyson Griffin got Aurelio down to the ground and proceeded to deliver a few quality shots to the head of Aurelio. Aurelio attempted some submissions including an arm-bar and a triangle. Both fighters get to standing position and punch it out till the bell.

Round two: Tyson comes out and in the first two minutes throws some solid leg kicks to the body of Aurelio. With around 3 minutes remaining Tyson pinned Aurelio up against the cage. 2 minutes remaining and Griffin slams Aurelio to the ground. Aurelio capitalizes on the situation and gets to the back of Griffin. Griffin escapes from the back attack and gets himself into Aurelio’s guard. Aurelio once again attempts a triangle and almost gets it locked in. The round ends clearly in favor of Griffin

Round three: Tyson once again comes out and shows Aurelio he knows how to kick box. Aurelio almost lands a knee on Griffin’s head. With 3 minutes remaining Aurelio is showing signs of tiredness but still attempts a take-down on Tyson Griffin. The take-down failed and Griffin landed a combo on Aurelio. With two minutes left in the round Tyson Griffin is dominating the stand up game. 1:30 remains and Griffin is back in the guard of Aurelio who almost gets the arm-bar.

Final result: Tyson Griffin wins the fight by unanimous decision 30-27

KJ Noons vs Yves Edwards

KJ Noons once again proved that being underdog isn’t that bad. The photo above courtesy of EliteXC is Noons knocking Edwards down with a huge right 30 seconds into the first round.

The title fight was amazing. KJ Noons retained his title in just under 45 seconds due to TKO. It was the fastest set of elbows I have ever seen delivered to the head of an opponent. Noons deserved to retain the title and once again shock the fans of the EliteXC.

After the quick post fight interviews with Goldberg Nick Diaz came to the ring to see about a rematch with Noons. It escalated quickly though and security had to come in and separate the two fighters teams.

All in all it was a great event from the EliteXC

Thiago Alves (174) VS Matt Hughes (170)

Round 1: Hughes tries the take down but doesn’t get it. Matt throws him up against the cage then pulls guard. Alves throws some punches and goes back to standing. They get back to the ground with Alves getting Hughes in guard. Thiago Alves holds Matt Hughes in place on the ground. Hughes tries to pass but only gets into half guard. Alves stands but Hughes keeps control of the knee. Alves spins out and ends up once again in Hughes’ guard. Thiago gets high and does some ground ‘n’ pound. This round goes to Thiago Alves in my opinion.

Round 2: Matt Hughes takes a big knee at the start of the round but manages to pull guard over Thiago Alves. Alves escapes and gives another huge knee to Hughes. Referee Herb Dean stops the fight due to TKO

Result: Thiago Alves defeats Matt Hughes via TKO in round two.

Jason Day (184) VS Michael Bisping (184)

Round 1: Both fighters come out punching and throwing a few leg kicks. Bisping gets day on the ground and throws some huge punches to the face of Day. Bisping gets side control but Day gets up only to be took back into side control. Bisping gets mount and then spins round to back control delivering punches. Michael Bisping wins by TKO (Strikes)

Result: Michael Bisping defeats Jason Day by TKO (strikes) in round one.

Mike Swick (170) VS Marcus Davis (170)

Round 1: Swick throwing some big head kicks but gets caught be a fist. Both fighters get up against the cage and Swick gets the take down. Swick has pretty much remained in the guard of Davis all the way through the round getting a few passes here and there. End of round one.

Round 2: Swick throws some huge punches and knees to get Davis to the ground and into Davis’ guard. Swick gets the pass from the guard into side control. The fight gets back to standing with two minutes remaining. Davis throws a few combinations and attempts a take down but fails. Davis manages to get Swick down. Swick attempts triangle but can’t get it. The fight goes back to it’s feet where Swick slammed Davis hard into the mat. In my opinion Swick took the round.

Round 3: Both fighters throwing some good punches and keep getting up against the cage with each other, throwing some knees while they are there. One point deducted from Swick for holding the cage. Swick gave some huge punches while in the guard of Davis. I give the round to Swick once again even with the point deduction

Result: All 3 judges 29-27 for Mike Swick

Thales Leites (185) VS Nate Marquardt (185)

Round 1: Leites gets a huge puch about two minutes in knocking Marquardt down and getting mount. Marquardt escapes and gets the fight back on it’s feet. Marquardt gets a good combination of punches and rocks Leites close to the end of round one. Round ended pretty even from both fighters. Maybe 10-9 to Leites

Round 2: Marquardt has a nice combination and puts in an illegal knee to Leites’ face while he is on the ground. Leites continued to fight. Leites is bleeding a lot from the mouth midway through the round. Marquardt is putting in some huge punches to his downed opponent. Marquardt continues to throw the elbows with a minute remaining. Herb Dean stands the fight up with 30 seconds remaining. Leites mounts Marquardt and gets a few punches in. End of round two. Clearly the round has to go to Marquardt even with the illegal knee he kept control afterwards.

Round 3: Both fighters come out and touch gloves. Leites puts in a flying knee attempt but Marquardt takes him down. Leites goes for the triangle. Marquardt hits the back of the head and he gets a second point deducted. Marquardt throws a huge right hand. 3 minutes remain and both fighters remain standing. Leites keeps attempting the rubber guard. Marquardt comes in with a pile driver. It looked very illegal due to landing on the neck.

Result: 28-27 Leitis, 28-27 Marquardt, 28-27 Leitis. The two points deducted allowed Leitis to win the fight by split decision

Fabricio Werdum (247) VS Brandon Vera (228)

Round 1: UFC 85 gets underway and the two guys do a lot of grappling. Vera gets Werdum in guard but Werdum continues to deliver the puches to the face. Vera releases the guard and gets back to standing. Vera got a huge punch and Werdum looked hurt for a few seconds. Werdum gets a good takedown but right into Vera’s Guard. Werdum gets mount and begins the ground and pound process. Vera keeps his hand up with the face covered. He is not defenseless but the referee stopped the fight much to the dislike of the English crowd.

Result: Fabricio Werdum defeats Brandon Vera with 20 seconds remaining in the first round due to TKO (Strikes)
