Anderson Silva Victorious at 205lbs

July 20, 2008 · Filed Under Recap, UFC · Comment

Anderson Silva, the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world mad his move up to light-heavyweight last night. His first opponent at the new weight was James “The Sandman” Irvin.

James Irvin was coming fresh off of his 8 second win against Houston Alexander at the last fight night, Fight Night 13.

Anderson Silva proved to MMA fans that he is one of the best around. He caught a kick of James Irvin’s just a minute in and followed through with a right hook. It was lights out for Irvin just a minute and one second into the fight.

Surely Anderson Silva can go further in his quest up the light-heavyweight division but first he will be re-defending his middleweight championship. Most likely against Yushin Okami sometime around UFC 90.

UFC: Silva Vs. Irvin Preview

July 17, 2008 · Filed Under Events, UFC · Comment

The UFC fighters will be in action again this weekend with Fight Night 14. The event is a direct competitor to Afflictions attempts at getting into the events circle. The UFC has tried to put together the best card they can without giving too many freebies away. UFC Fight Night 14: Silva Vs. Irvin will be live and free this Saturday night on Spike TV or Setanta Sports in the UK.

UFC Fight Night 14 sees the return of hardcore party maniac Jesse Taylor. Jesse was thrown off of the Ultimate Fighter for simply partying too hard and annoying some people. Now he is back though and will be facing of against who many believed would win the Ultimate Fighter CB Dollaway. CB is coming into this fight after being the runner up of the last season on the show.

Two other Ultimate Fighter crew members will also be facing off against each other. Both fighters last fights were against CB which they both lost,  putting them out of the Ultimate Fighter. These two fighters are Tim Credeur and Cale Yarbrough. Tim almost got his chance at being a finalist but just missed out after losing to CB. Cale is trying to get his career started, this will be his first professional fight.

Other fights include undefeated heavyweight Cain Velasquez against Jake O’Brien, Light Heavyweight hopefuls Brandon Vera against Reese Andy and Lightweight fighter Hermes Franca taking on Frank Edgar.

The Main Event - Anderson “The Spider” Silva Vs. James “The Sandman” Irvin

The Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva will be making his move up to Light Heavyweight to face off against James Irvin.

James Irvin is coming off the quick win at Fight Night 13. In just 8 seconds his superman punch put an end to the fight. The Sandmans current record in the UFC is 4-3 with an overall MMA record of 14-4-1. Irvin is on a two fight win streak and will be looking to carry on climbing up the Light Heavyweight division with a win against Anderson Silva.

Anderson Silva is the current Middleweight Champion looking for a move up to Light Heavyweight. To succeed in the new division he will have to defeat James Irvin. Silva is currently considered the best fighter on the planet in most pound-for-pound rankings. There is no doubt that Anderson Silva is the clear favorite for the fight but can he go any further in the new division? Maybe to even holding both titles. Only time will tell…

July 19th: Affliction Vs. UFC

July 12, 2008 · Filed Under Affliction, UFC · 1 Comment

It’s old news now and I’m sure that every dedicated MMA fan knows the story behind it all. For those that don’t… Basically Affliction, the clothing company are putting on their first live MMA show titled “Affliction: Banned.” The Affliction card is one of the greatest anyone could of put together. What better way to stop the fans from seeing it than giving people a free event featuring your greatest fighter. Well thats exactly what the UFC did to counter. They offered a free event to be aired on Spike TV featuring the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world Anderson Silva on his move up-to Light Heavyweight fighting James “Sandman” Irvin.

So will it work? I think it will. They should get good numbers of PPV buys. Not good numbers by UFC standards but I think they will be up there. Affliction is already nearing the the almost 11,000 tickets sold by the UFC for their recent event, UFC 86. Currently sitting at around 8,500 tickets with just over a week to go to the event officially kicks off, it wont be a sell out but it should be close.

In my opinion Affliction will get approximately 350,000 PPV buys and sell around 9,500 tickets for their show. I think it will be deemed a success even with the UFC trying to compete.

On the night of the event I not be watching either live. I will be going to see KOTC Canada which is right here in Edmonton. I will see both the events though. UFC via DVR and for Affliction I will buy the re-run as soon as I get home without even going on the net. I will give full analysis on all 3 of the events from that night.

James Irvin: Rashad Evans is Taking A Step Down at UFC 85

April 27, 2008 · Filed Under 85, UFC, Upcoming Fights · Comment

“I’m just so happy that he would even take the fight against me. I consider him an ‘A’ level fighter, and I consider myself a ‘C’ level fighter, maybe a ‘B’ level because I just beat Houston trying to claw my way up to the top. So for him to take a step down and fight me, I’m greatly appreciative of the guy, who is someone I look up to as one of those top tier fighters.”

The quote above came from James Irvin. Irvin will be fighting Evans at UFC 85 in London, England. It was all made possible by Chuck Liddell tearing up his hamstring.  Irvin as he says above considers himself a ‘B’ fighter after KO’ing Houston Alexander at Fight Night 13. The knockout was only 8 seconds in from a superman punch.

UFC 85: Chuck Liddell’s Replacement

The UFC has had to start modifying the card for UFC 85 after Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell’s recent hamstring injury.

No announcements on UFC’s part have been made yet but MMAmania claim they have sources to what the fights are going to be.

MMAmania announced that Chuck Liddell will be replaced by James Irvin in the fight against Rashad Evans. It has also been mentioned that a fight between middleweights Michael Bisping and Chris Leben could now also be taking place at the 02 arena in London.

Stay tuned for updates on this fightcard!
