Kalib Starnes is Glad he Doesn’t Fight for the UFC

October 14, 2008 · Filed Under 83, Quotes, UFC · Comment

“People like to be on the side that’s winning. They’re supportive when you’re winning and critical when you’re losing. I still get some sweet hate mails pretty regularly. There are some gyms with guys who begged me to come in there and train and do seminars before that fight and who wouldn’t return my calls or talk to me afterwards…. It’s good. It separates people who are really supportive and back you from people that are just trying to jump on your wagon while you’re successful…. [Being granted a release from the UFC] was something I’m happy about. I’m glad I’m not fighting there and will be fighting independently where I want and for whoever wants to pay me.”

This was one of the most annoying things I have ever seen in the UFC. Kalib Starnes running backwards for a majority of the fight he had against Nate Quarry at UFC 83. It annoyed me because the UFC is supposed to be the “elite” and this guy spends his fight back-peddling. Not like Lyoto Machida who acctually has a style, no, Starnes was avoiding the fight. Sure he may of been injured, he could of got his corner to throw in the towel instead of embarrasing himself. I have nothing against him in a personal way but I can say that if I owned a fighting organization I would not hire him for a fight.

Kalib Starnes Explains!

Kalib Starnes has released a statement on his website about his fight with Nate Quarry. Heres a snippet of the release:

This sport is as much about losing as it is about winning. There is a winner and a loser in every fight. I tried to win but on that night I couldn’t do it and I lost. Instead of allowing me to lose with dignity I was booed and called names and ridiculed beyond anything which seems reasonable to me. I tried to box with him and I couldn’t find my range, I tried to kickbox with him and I broke my foot, I tried to take him down and grapple with him but I was unable to, I tried to work in the clinch but that didn’t work either, in short, I failed. No excuses.

Kalib Starnes: Broken Foot Against Nathan Quarry

April 22, 2008 · Filed Under 83, Contracts, Injuries, Interviews, UFC · Comment

Kalib Starnes told The Fight Network that Dana White didn’t cut his remaining contract. He actually asked to leave on Monday.

“[UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva told me that it usually takes a couple of days for their legal department to complete the paperwork and that he would send me all of the paperwork to indicate that my contract has been dissolved,” Starnes said. “Later on in the afternoon, after I had spoken to Joe Silva, a story was released by some reporter from Yahoo! in which Dana White said that he had released me from my contract. I received no documentation on that, and it came after I asked to be released.”

Kalib Starnes in the same article with the fight network told how his broken foot after the first kick he threw was the real reason for all the back peddling he did against Nate Quarry in their one sided fight at UFC 83.

“Right now, I have a broken foot [that] I sustained with the first kick I threw in the fight,” Starnes said. “My leg is purple and black from my knee up, I have a black eye, a sprained jaw, and he’s questioning my desire to fight? If that isn’t enough to satisfy him and the crowd, I can show them the medical report. I can barely walk. [Quarry] totally destroyed my thigh with those kicks. I’m sure a lot of people would rather see me suffer a traumatic brain injury and be rendered unconscious. That’s too bad. If that’s what they want, they’re paying the wrong guy $10,000 to get his brain smashed in.”
