Karo Parisyan Tests Positive for Painkillers After UFC 94

February 10, 2009 · Filed Under 94, UFC · Comment

Karo Parisyan was once close to being on top of the UFC Welterweight division. With a record of 19-5 Parisyan is probably about to hit a massive rough-patch in terms of his career. In the standard drug tests that the Nevada State Athletic Commission perform after every event Karo Parisyan tested positive for several painkillers, including Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone and Oxymorphone.

Pasisyan fought Korean judo practitioner Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 94. Parisyan won the bout via split decision. There has been no word on whether Parisyan will be suspended or if the result of the bout will result in a no contest.

All of the other tested fighters (Georges St. Pierre, B.J. Penn, Lyoto Machida, Thiago Silva, Clay Guida, Jon Jones, Jake O’Brien, John Howard, Thiago Tavares, Stephan Bonnar and Nate Diaz) resulted in a negative when the tests came back.

GSP Was Going to be Penn’s Last Fight

February 3, 2009 · Filed Under 94, Retirement, UFC · Comment

“I have no clue what is going on in my head right now. I was going to make this my last fight and finish up fighting GSP. In my head, I was with [the UFC] for nine or ten years and I kind of just wanted to be finished with this whole thing after this. So I don’t know where my head is right now.”

For the first time since his loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94 BJ Penn spoke publically today in an interview with KHON2. BJ Penn told KHON2 his plans for retirement after his ‘Superfight’ with GSP. Unfortunately he lost the fight and never came away as dual champion. Now the problem for Penn is whether he will vacate the Lightweight Championship and retire or return to prove his dominance in the Lightweight division with a fight against Kenny Florian.

I hope that Penn’s decision is to return. He is only 30 years old and there are still many fighters in the lightweight division who Penn has not come up against. One fight that comes to mind would be the lightweight fight between Penn and our 2nd ranked lightweight fighter Shinya Aoki. Aoki is currently the WAMMA lightweight champion after the quick work he made of Alvarez on NYE.

UFC 94: Fighters Salaries and Bonuses

February 1, 2009 · Filed Under 94, Salaries, UFC · Comment

Below are the fighters salaries for last nights UFC 94. These numbers are not the final amounts that each fighter will be paid. Fighters also have specific bonuses which the Athletic Commission does not look into. Fighters also have to pay manager fees and taxes before they can head out and spend that hard earned cash.

GSP is one fighter who has a clause built into his contract which gives him a cut of PPV sales. So if UFC 94 got over a million buys GSP’s salary would get a great boost.

Fight bonuses for UFC 94 were also handed out Lyoto Machida scored KO of the night (it was the only one) and two fight of the night awards were handed out. One to John Howard vs. Chris Wilson and the other Clay Guida vs. Nate Diaz. Each one of these fighters will find an extra $65,000 coming their way.

Georges St. Pierre $400,000 (includes $200,000 win bonus) def. B.J. Penn $125,000

Lyoto Machida $120,000 (includes $60,000 win bonus) def. Thiago Silva $29,000

Jon Jones $14,000 (includes $7,000 win bonus) def. Stephan Bonnar $22,000

Karo Parisyan $80,000 (includes $40,000 win bonus) def. Dong Hyun Kim $26,000

Clay Guida $40,000 (includes $20,000 win bonus) def. Nate Diaz $20,000

Jon Fitch $68,000 (includes $34,000 win bonus) def. Akihiro Gono $28,000

UFC 94 Live Commentary:

Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre vs. lightweight champion BJ Penn

Fight Recap: GSP basically dominated every single round. The first one was the only round where BJ looked like a fighter. GSP kept the side-mount on BJ in rounds 2,3 and four and Penn could just not find his way out. BJ Penn took an extreme beating and in the end Jay D (BJ’s brother) told the doctor to stop the fight and that was it. GSP retained his title in a dominating fashion.

Final result:GSP wins via (T)KO

Lyoto Machida vs. Thiago Silva

Fight Recap: Lyoto Machida does his usual kick and retreat. Machida also threw in a few take-downs. Then in the very last seconds Machida took Silva down and threw a punch which knocked Silva clean out. He then followed threw with a second punch which was not needed.

Final result: Lyoto Machida wins via KO

Stephan Bonnar vs. Jon Jones

Fight Recap: The return of Stephan Bonnar was not good for him. Jon Jones was able to get the decision win by controlling a majority of the fight. Jones gets his seventh win and second in the Octagon.

Final result: 29-28 Unanimous Decision for Jon Jones

Karo Parisyan vs. Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim

Fight Recap: An over the top boring fight. Obviously both guys using their Judo. Kim kept controlling the standing. I am writing this after knowing the result and I would say that Kim got shafted by the judges.

Final result: 29-28 Parisyan 29-28 Kim 29-28 Parisyan

Nate Diaz vs. Clay Guida

Fight Recap: A very good fight between to guys who are at the top of the game right now. Clay Guida got off to the early start clearly taking the first round. The second round could of gone either way but I would of predicted the Diaz took it.

The fight was full of take-downs and submission attempts from both fighters. Guida won the fight handing Diaz his first loss in the Octagon.

Final result: 29-28 Diaz 29-28 Guida 29-28 Guida

UFC 94: Georges “Rush” St. Pierre (17-2) vs. BJ “The Prodigy” Penn (13-4-1) Preview

St-Pierre-BJ-Penn-UFC-94

This fight has the potential to be the greatest fight ever in the UFC. So much is on the line, if BJ Penn wins he will go down as the greatest UFC pound-for-pound fighter ever. Much the same if St. Pierre wins too. UFC 94 will be a night to remember for MMA fans for years to come.

Whoever wins this fight should be going down on everyone’s rankings as the number one pound-for-pound fighter.

Almost three years have passed since BJ Penn and GSP last met in the octagon. It was UFC 58, USA vs. Canada and GSP managed to get that point for Canada in a split decision win that many believe the judges got wrong.

BJ Penn in a sense destroyed GSP in the first round so-much-so that Pierre was not able to find his own corner at the bell. Somehow he was able to fight back using a series of takedowns and controlling Penn on the mat. Apparently this was enough for two of the three judges who scored the bout 29-28, 28-29, and 29-28. After watching the fight I remember thinking it could of been a draw or a win for Penn. I did not believe that Pierre did enough.

The UFC took a page out of HBO’s book for this fight. Primetime has been airing for the past three weeks. It has showed viewers what is in store for the fight and gave a behind the scenes look at training and personal lives. The whole show seemed to be trying to influence people into thinking Pierre would be the winner. It showd Penn as being lazy and taking vacations when he should be training. I know he has some issues with those things but has Penn ever disapointed in a fight? I can’t remember a time when he has.

This is the hardest fight I have ever had to pick a winner for. Both Pierre and Penn have improved so much over the past three years. One is Welterweight Champion the other is the Lightweight Champion but I do believe that one man will be walking out of that Octagon with two belts. I have no idea how the end will come but I do think that Penn will take it.

I am not a Penn fan nor a St.Pierre fan. I admire both fighters skills and would like to see both of them victorious but that can’t happen unless there is a draw which would make my mind explode in frustration.

So for my final prediction in this fight I will say BJ Penn via (T)KO in round 4.
